A Word About Carbon!

There are several different processes as to which a manufacturer can apply carbon to the pole. Many have borrowed technology from the makers of golf shafts and hockey sticks, applying carbon in a weave or lay up of carbon against itself going in two directions. While these techniques may prove effective for golf shafts and hockey sticks which must remain rigid, they are not very desirable for a flexible vaulting pole.

In the construction of vaulting poles, laying carbon against itself has been a long time industry “no-no” because it often results in “inner delamination failure” when the glue holding the two layers together begins to weaken. It’s kind of like joining two pencil leads together with white school glue as the binder! Once the inner layer weakens the outside layer must hold the load which usually results in catastrophic failure after subsequent usage of the product… often within a mere 25 additional vaults!

Because of these issues, several pole vault camps and many top coaches including Earl Bell, have banned the use of weave carbon poles as just one accident can take an athlete out of competition for an entire season with negative effects for both the vaulter and the team. This may mean the difference from winning a championship or not!

ESSX Classic Carbon and Encore Elite poles are different.

We never employ unsafe practices in constructing a pole. Instead, our manufacturing process uses the highest quality T-700 UniCarbon available along with a proprietary helical wrap that results in a pole that is safe, lightweight and performs phenomenally. Last year, out of over 1200 carbon poles made with our superior materials and fabrication techniques, we only two break… and those were because the athlete required a stiffer, stronger pole… not delamination! The most common breakage today is from a ding on the standards or because a pole is not caught!

Several years ago the major rules committee was in the process of banning carbon poles. They didn’t, because they learned that there is more than one process to making these poles which can result in a very safe pole if manufacturing standards are maintained! ESSX meets and exceeds these standards. You can trust ESSX Carbon Poles!
